We used to live exciting lives in the city
Drinking shots and burning bright
Til the clubs closed, then the Casinos
Then back to a flat, days turning out of nights
We used to shop in records shops and go to gigs
And sleep-in and watch films and overthink
And go out drinking midweek on a whim
We used live in a spin on the edge of a whirlwind
And an explosion, commotion potion
Do the locomotion, shedding emotions, get stocious in the Scotia
We used to smoke cigarettes, throats like barbed wire
Then pour whiskey down them just to add to the fire
We used to be sure of everything we did, we were right
We had opinions and read books and treated life
Like a cat catching a mouse just to play with it
And people said “you better watch that one she’s dangerous”
We used to live lives like acrobats on high wires
Circus tricks, free running, worth the risk, heid buzzing
Adrenaline daily, hedonist babies on feminist waves
At tremendous rebellious raves, heads in a daze
Experimenting with anything and everything
Just to dismember the taste
Wrecked in the most perfect of ways
And what I want more than anything these days
Is to give you guys a place to be safe
And have fun and laugh and carry on
And make memories to look back fondly on:
Books with pictures and witches and paddling pools
Water pistols, lego, plastic farmyard animals
Aesop Rock’s Fables, wizards and crab’s pincers
Not leaving the table ’til you’ve finished yir dinner
Swing-parks and climbing frames, morning cartoons
Spiderman pyjamas, cereal in the living room
Looking for bugs under rocks, fingernails thick mud
Tadpoles to frogs and a 10p mix up
Singing Colonel Mustard Cross the Road, Kirby cat’s eyes
Please Don’t Go, stay and make ma heart fly
Despicable Me, Happy, tunes on, dancing songs,
And I-like to move it move it
(Madagascar ‘s a lot to answer for)
We used to live in epic cutting-edge futuristic poetry
Dancing on the edge of chaos swimming in dopamine
Sleeping on bin bags, waking broken like my concentration
Foetal, then reborn, blooming back into constellations
And now truth is life’s every bit as cosmic
Wondrous lands, dragons, dinosaurs and comets
And the magic of everyday things is beautiful
But you forget they’re magic at all when you get used to them
We left exciting lives in the city
And switched highs and lows to bide with little folk
So then in 12 to 15 years when your all grown up
And those bright lights are looking pretty
You can escape the suburbs
And live exciting lives in the city
Clocking in over an hour, a real "Who's Who" of voices over the Astronaut's audio productions in many styles. Supported this for the Ast-Ast and some of my favorite rappers: Texture, Solareye, Laughing Gear (Eaters!), Harlequinade (Soleni), Replicator, and Tickle. Love what is going on in Scotland's hip hop tribe. Oddio Overplay
Keening, yearning, captivating and lovely collection of songs, the sense of close performance all the more remarkable when you learn it was made during Covid lockdown in 2020. The ballads and poems set to music on this album might be hundreds of years old, and while they do have an air of immortal, ancient tradition about them, they sound utterly current. Badzie
